My USB ports have stopped working - Computers, Math, Science ...

They started acting up yesterday and just stopped working today.
When I connect a usb stick or my mobile internet modem, it just says that it's not functioning properly or that there is no drive installed. I've tried uninstalling them and then rebooting but that didn't work.
I don't know much about computers so I would really appreciate some help!

Ok so now I have done a recovery. Didn't help.
Also even before I did the recovery the sound of video was far too fast. Even when I played something on VLC. I have no idea what is going on.

Sounds like a hardware problem to me. Unless of course you're using Windows 8 which seems to be unable to communicate with quite a few device drivers. You really might want to go to a PC repair shop and have them do a physical(electronic) test of your USB interface. If there's no yellow warning triangle then the driver is installed but your operating system is not detecting any devices attached to your USB drive.
